It was announced today that Paramount have decided to side with HD-DVD in yet another twist to the format wars which have been brewing for some months now, with Universal already on HD-DVD’s side this is undoubtedly a blow to the Blu Ray camp, however with the latter having major studio’s like Sony and Disney on board this news is hardly going to have them thinking the war is lost.

So as this war continues to be fought out, who are the eventual losers going to be? well unfortunately it is you, the consumer, you see no matter what format you opt for (and they both have their advantages), when a winner is finally clear consumers on both sides will have spent out money on the hardware and films, with the people who have the losing format finding that they will have to spend out again on different technology if they want to keep up with the times and you can guess who the only winners are here, yes that’s right, the movie studio’s.

So what can you do? don’t buy high definition movie’s, that would be my advise, at least not until one clear front-runner emerges because otherwise at least some of you reading this article are going to be dipping into your pockets for a second time to make the movie studio’s even richer. 

Microsoft today announced a price cut for the Xbox 360 in Europe, effectively knocking £30 off the price of the standard premium version, making it £249.99 with the Elite coming in at £299.99, now as the Xbox 360 is selling generally well in the UK anyway this news can only boost sales of the console, but what are Sony going to do to combat this?

With the Leipzig Games Conference coming this week we reckon that Sony have some rather big announcements up their sleeves and it does seem strange that Microsoft should announce this now rather than wait a few days until their press conference at Leipzig, so perhaps they know something about Sony’s announcements and thought they would steal the  limelight now rather than waiting?

We wont know for sure until Leipzig starts on the Wednesday.
